On March 27, local residents from various walks of life gathered in front of Liberal Member of Parliament Vance Badawey’s office in Welland to protest the federal government increasing the carbon tax on April 1.
Jasraj Singh Hallan currently serves as the Member of Parliament for Calgary Forest Lawn as well as the Conservative Shadow Minister of Finance and Middle Class Prosperity. Hallan was visiting Niagara and took part in the rally.
“On Wednesday, I supported common sense Conservative candidate Fred Davies (Welland), the great people of Niagara and 70 per cent of Canadians who are opposed to the carbon tax spike,” Hallan shared in a recent sit-down with The Niagara Independent. “This will be a completely unacceptable 23 per cent increase to gas, groceries and home heating, during a time that we are already dealing with a housing crisis and insane levels of inflation.”
“This is not an environmental plan but a tax plan. It is a scam, it doesn’t lower emissions, and Justin Trudeau doesn’t care.”

“The Liberals have sold this scam like it would put money into people’s pockets, and that is false,” said Hallan. “What we are actually seeing is many hardworking Canadian families facing a net-loss.”
While the Conservatives have been stalwart in their opposition to the carbon tax since day one, it is perhaps more remarkable that high-profile Liberals, including Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey, as well as newly elected Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie, are becoming increasingly cynical toward Trudeau’s approach.
With that being said, environmental stewardship continues to be a priority for Canadian voters. Hallan believes that Conservatives have the best plan to achieve this goal without hurting the economy.
“Our common sense Conservative plan will focus on technology over taxes, utilize and not hinder the development of our abundant natural resources and get out of the way of people and businesses that are developing green products, facilitating the creation of good jobs and powerful paychecks,” Hallan explained.
“This Liberal government imposes a carbon tax on hard-working Canadians and then thinks nothing of importing dirty dictator oil from countries and organizations around the world that don’t respect human rights or share our values,” said Hallan. “We have democratic allies like Germany and Greece who are begging us to provide them with our rich, ethical and environmentally responsible natural gas, so that they can stop being reliant on people like Putin, but then we have Prime Minister Trudeau saying that there isn’t a business case for it.”
“A Conservative government, led by Prime Minister Pierre Poilievre, will put an end to the carbon tax scam, develop our natural resources, grow the economy, while actually lowering emissions.”
