In terms of hiring, retaining, and developing top talent, the Corporation of the City of Welland is one of the best organizations across Canada, a new report indicates.

According to leading business and employment publication Canadian HR Reporter, the City of Welland has one of the country’s most innovative human resources teams.

The City was one of only 28 organizations named to the publication’s Innovative HR Teams list for 2023.

The list recognized organizations “that are breaking boundaries to move the HR profession forward — whether it’s by taking a progressive approach to recruitment, introducing new technology, or rolling out a ground-breaking reward and recognition strategy.”

“Where we are the same as everyone else in our competition for talent, we have set ourselves apart with how we recruit and our overall approach in engaging with candidates before they’ve applied,” Welland’s manager of HR Andrea Daisley said in a media release last week.

“Through their dedication, skill, and experience, our HR team encompasses all the traits recognized in this award and has significantly impacted our ability to recruit, retain, and recognize our employees at the City of Welland.”

Welland was the only municipality in the country to be named to HR Reporter’s 2023 list, which also included Air Canada, University of Alberta, TransAlta, Metrolinx, and Ottawa Community Housing, among others.

According to the City, the municipality’s podcast What’s up, Welland? was one of the ways the organization “opened the door to creative recruitment”.

Per the City, the podcast’s HR-guided episodes, which featured members of the HR team fielding questions directly from job seekers, were some of the series’ most listened to and downloaded episodes.

“Unique and engaging” social media content, according to Welland staff, also helped push the City over the top this year.

In all, 21 of the 28 teams on HR Reporter’s 2023 list hail from Ontario, four come from Alberta, two from Quebec, and one from British Columbia.
