As the Fonthill Legion, Branch 613, continues to serve local veterans and their families, the need to enhance user accessibility has never been greater. With this objective in mind, the Ontario government is dedicating $148,900 through the Ontario Trillium Foundation to support accessibility renovations at the Fonthill location.
The announcement, which was made on Feb. 12, was attended by Niagara West Member of Provincial Parliament Sam Oosterhoff, Niagara Regional Councillor Diana Huson, Town of Pelham Mayor Marvin Junkin, various Pelham town counsellors, as well as Branch 613 President Toni McKelvie.
“The Fonthill Legion is an important service organisation in our community serving veterans and their families, as well as so many others,” said Oosterhoff. “I am thankful for the work they do and grateful for the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation in recognizing their need with a capital grant to construct a more accessible Legion Hall in Fonthill. I congratulate Branch 613 and thank them for the vital contributions they make to our local community.”
The renovations, when completed, will include an improved front entrance with automatic doors, enhanced lighting and a more seamlessly usable outdoor walkway.
“Pelham is very fortunate to have such a hard-working group from our local Legion that serves the whole community,” said Junkin. “From the countless number of meals served to support local veterans, their impact on Pelham residents has been very positive. It is encouraging to see other levels of government supporting the Legion, and this funding will enable the great work of Branch 613 to continue.”
Regional Councillor Huson also expressed enthusiasm for the funding.
“Our local Legion is a cherished community hub,” Huson said. “We welcome this provincial investment for this important space to ensure it can meet accessibility needs of our community and continue to be enjoyed by all, regardless of physical ability.”
Branch 613 President Tony McKelvie thanked all of the government officials involved on behalf of all of the Legion’s members.
