Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Softball Canada, in consultation with the 2021 Canada Games Host Society and the Provincial/Territorial Softball Organizations, has made the decision to cancel both the U14 and U16 Boys Canadian Fast Pitch Championships that were scheduled to take place from August 5 to 9, 2020 at Southward Park in Grimsby and at Jordan Lions Park in Lincoln.
Officials said in a statement that the decision was based on the recommendations from public health experts, and was made in order to ensure the health and safety of all the athletes, coaches, officials, support staff, volunteers and spectators. Logistical concerns, team selection timelines, venue availability, limited travel between provinces, and adequate training opportunities were also contributing factors.
“Unfortunately, due to the lead-up time required to host any Canadian Championship and the current uncertainty around travel, facility openings and respective dates when play may be able to start, we regretfully will be cancelling all 2020 Canadian Championships,” said Scott Neiles, President of Softball Canada. “We would like to thank all our 2020 Championship Hosts for their diligent work in preparing to organize these Championships. We share their disappointment in not being able to provide these premier events to the players, coaches, umpires, family members and fans who were looking forward to the experience.”
“While we are disappointed that we won’t be able to host two Canadian Fast Pitch Championships in 2020, we completely support Softball Canada’s decision,” added Doug Hamilton, Board Chair of the 2021 Canada Games Host Society. “Despite today’s disappointing news, we continue to look forward to hosting both the men’s (U21) and women’s (U18) softball competitions next summer as part of the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games”.
Both the men’s (U21) and women’s (U18) softball competitions that will be featured at the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games will be held at Southward Park in Grimsby.
