Late last month, Niagara Region offered an update on its Gilmore Lodge redevelopment project and announced that residents of the existing Gilmore Lodge and Upper Canada Lodge will move into their new home on Dec. 18.
“The redevelopment of Gilmore Lodge marks a significant milestone for Niagara and the future of long-term care in our community,” said Jim Bradley, Niagara Regional Chair. “This state-of-the-art facility reflects our commitment to providing not only high-quality care but also a living environment that fosters dignity, comfort, and connection.”
“With its innovative design, Gilmore Lodge will set a new standard for long-term care homes in Canada.”
The new Gilmore Lodge is a newly built long-term care home located in Fort Erie. The Region is describing it as a state-of-the-art facility that was designed with input from staff, residents, families, and community partners.
So-called enhancements include modern bedrooms and bathrooms, individual climate control, and upgraded technology.
The new home will have 160 beds and will have several neighbourhoods to separate out the facility. Each “neighbourhood” will have 32 residents. Each of those groups are divided again in half, with 16 residents sharing a dining room, living room, and activity room, among other amenities.
The Region is also touting that the new Gilmore Lodge will meet WELL building Standards, which prioritize holistic health and include restorative staff areas to help encourage a healthy and supportive environment for caregivers. Staff-only spaces have been built in throughout the facility.
“The Gilmore Lodge is a game-changer for both residents and staff,” said Henri Koning, Commissioner of Community Services. “The thoughtful design of quiet spaces and restorative areas gives staff the tools they need to provide the best care possible, while also ensuring their well-being so they can continue to do the work they love with compassion and energy.”
Niagara Region will also open the new Gilmore Community Hub early next year, on Jan. 6, 2025. The Hub is attached to the Lodge and will facilitate services for seniors, families, and communities. It will host activities and programs, and offer social, wellness, and outreach services to help allow older adults to stay safe and independent in their homes for as long as possible.
Before residents move in, the Region is hosting a public open house on Dec. 5 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The open house will include guided tours and refreshments. The facility is located at 60 King Street in Fort Erie.
