After more than three years of construction and several delays, the brand-new Niagara Falls Exchange is nearing completion.
Located on Sylvia Avenue, The Exchange will serve as the city’s new cultural hub. It will also be the new home of the Niagara Falls Farmer’s Market. Once The Exchange is open, it will provide opportunities for artists of various types to express themselves and share their work. To support these initiatives, an art gallery, art studio and woodworking studio will be key components of the centre. The Farmer’s Market, which has historically run on Saturdays from Victoria Day through Thanksgiving outside of the McBain Community Centre, will now be able to operate year-round with indoor facilities. Additional attractions will include a culture and market hall, a cafe and public washrooms.
The initial building plan would have seen the centre open for Canada Day in 2022. However, multiple grand opening dates have been delayed, most recently the one slated for September 21st, 2023. Pandemic-related disruptions were the original culprit, while construction and logistical issues have been cited as the most recent factors. The delays have been the subject of great disappointment and frustration for various stakeholders who continue to eagerly await the opening, citing all the increased vibrance that it will bring to the city.
“After much anticipation, the city looks forward to welcoming residents to explore and experience culture, culinary, entertainment, art… and all the live and local things you love, at the Exchange,” Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Dioati said. “We can’t wait for residents to make this space their own, to gather and experience Niagara Falls in countless new ways!”
Staff are now beginning to move into The Exchange location, as residents, small businesses, artists and local government look forward to the grand opening.
