Construction has officially started on the Grimsby GO Station, which will include a platform, 220 parking spaces, a bus loop, and pick up and drop off areas.
Local Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff was joined by Premier Doug Ford, Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria, Grimsby Mayor Jeff Jordan, and a whole host of other politicians to mark the official commencement of construction.
“Our government is making record investments in transit across the province, including this critical expansion of the Lakeshore West Line, connecting people to jobs, housing and opportunities in the Greater Golden Horseshoe,” said Oosterhoff.
“Today’s milestone announcement is yet another sign that this government and Premier Ford know that Niagara matters – and that we are putting our money where our mouth is – in tangible infrastructure investments that will help improve people’s lives for years to come,” Oosterhoff added.
The Grimsby GO Station will be the first GO Transit station using a new standardized approach, according to the Ontario government. The station will offer a repeatable model for the province to design and construct future GO stations in an efficient and cost-effective way.
The Lakeshore West line currently doesn’t have any stops between Confederation Station in Hamilton and St. Catharines Station in Niagara. That is all about to change with the addition of the Grimsby stop.
Jordan thanked the Ontario government for making such a critical local investment in Grimsby, which he said will be crucial for the community’s growth going forward.
“The start of construction on the Grimsby GO Station marks a significant milestone for our community and for the future of transportation across Niagara,” said Jordan. “I want to thank Minister Sarkaria and the Ontario government for their continued commitment to improving transit infrastructure and connecting people to jobs, education, and opportunity.”
“This long-awaited investment will help support our growing community, strengthen regional connections, and create lasting economic benefits for residents and businesses for years to come,” Jordan added.
The Grimsby GO Station is part of a much larger $14-billion investment in the GO Transit network as a means of delivering faster and more frequent service across the network. The Confederation GO Station opened just last year, and the Grimsby GO Station will be yet another additional stop to service residents living or working in the Hamilton-Niagara corridor.
“Grimsby GO is a game-changer for Niagara; it will get people where they’re going faster and safely, support good-paying jobs during construction and unlock increased service on the Lakeshore West line,” added Sarkaria.
