The last time Welland’s Sabrina D’Angelo played for a club team here in Canada was 2011.
Some 15 years later her homecoming was a winning one, 2-0 for AFC Toronto over the Montreal Roses Thursday night on the road.
D’Angelo made two saves for the clean sheet – a shutout in soccer.
After stops in Sweden and the Women’s Super League in England with Arsenal and Aston Villa, D’Angelo made the decision to come home and play for Toronto in the Northern Super League.
Born and raised in the Rose City, D’Angelo has become one of Canada’s most accomplished soccer goalkeepers, proudly representing both Niagara and Canada on some of the world’s biggest stages.
A product of the Welland Wizards Soccer Club and Niagara United, Sabrina’s journey began on local pitches before earning a scholarship to the University of South Carolina, where she established herself as one of the top goalkeepers in NCAA Division I soccer. Her outstanding collegiate career earned All-American honours and paved the way for a successful professional career.
Selected in the 2015 National Women’s Soccer League Draft, Sabrina quickly made her mark in professional soccer. She has competed across North America and Europe, capturing championships with the Western New York Flash and North Carolina Courage before continuing her career in Sweden and England’s Women’s Super League. Her success at every level reflects the resilience, professionalism and competitive spirit that have defined her career.
On the international stage, D’Angelo has proudly represented Canada for nearly two decades, progressing through the U-17 and U-20 national team programs before earning her senior national team debut in 2016. She was a member of Canada’s historic bronze medal-winning team at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and later represented Canada at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, while continuing to compete in FIFA Women’s World Cups, Concacaf Championships and other international competitions.
While her career has taken her to some of the world’s premier clubs and international tournaments, Sabrina has remained a proud ambassador for her hometown of Welland and the Niagara region. Her journey from local soccer fields to the Olympic stage demonstrates that world-class athletes can emerge from right here in Niagara through passion, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
From neighbourhood soccer fields in Welland to Olympic podiums and professional stadiums around the world, the now 33-year old D’Angelo has inspired a new generation of athletes across Niagara. Her story is one of resilience, determination and pride—showing young athletes that with hard work, dedication and belief in themselves, their dreams can extend far beyond their hometown.
As one of Canada’s premier goalkeepers, D’Angelo continues to represent Niagara with distinction, serving as both an elite competitor and a role model for aspiring athletes throughout the region.
Rod Mawhood is a lifelong Niagara native who has had the pleasure of working in all three mediums – Radio, Print and TV – for over 20 years. His first announcing gig was with the then St. Catharines Stompers. Since then he’s worked in radio and TV in Toronto, and currently is the announcer for the Niagara IceDogs and Niagara River Lions.
