With just under three weeks until Christmas, planning and preparations for the biggest meal of the year are sure to be well underway in most households. For those looking to order that all-important dessert, bakery pre-orders must be placed now to avoid disappointment at the dinner table.
Thankfully, Niagara has a rich selection of local small bakery businesses to choose from to get that sweet tooth fix over the Christmas holidays.
St. Catharines
Beechwood Doughnuts has launched their holiday doughnut menu as of December 1. Flavours featured for December are nanaimo, a vanilla-dipped snowflake-shaped doughnut, holiday nog dipped, sugar plum fritter, gingerbread cronut, and a chocolate cake doughnut topped with candy cane pieces. Pre-orders for these popular local vegan desserts can be made online for next-day pick-up or delivery, perfect for freezing to enjoy Christmas morning.
De La Terre Bakery is offering a holiday menu from December 1 to 31. Special sourdough breads include a caramelized onion loaf or roasted potato and sage as well as a winter fruit baguette. For pastry options, there are candy cane cookies, eggnog cruffins and butter tarts on offer. Finally, savoury bakes for purchase are a broccoli and leek quiche or winter vegetable galette. Port Colborne
The Pie Guys Bakery has opened their online bake shop for orders as of this past week. There is a wide variety of holiday inspired treats to choose from, including whipped shortbread cookies, Ferraro Rocher butter tarts, mincemeat tarts, holiday treat platters and a decadent black forest cheesecake. Savoury tourtiere meat pies will also be available for ordering between December 18-23, just in time for Christmas Eve gatherings. In-store there are also plenty of gift sets available as well as their daily seasonal menu options.
La Dolce Vita has a number of unique pastries and desserts available for order over the month of December. Their iconic croissant will be offered with a festive twist – coloured green and red. Cheesecake is available in various sizes and flavours from fruit compote to peanut butter, and even mint. A 40-piece dessert tray contains bite size squares or a Christmas cookie tray can be purchased by quantity or price by weight. Mincemeat pies, tarts and Christmas fruitcakes can also be selected for orders.
Beyond the Batter in Port Colborne has a large Christmas menu to choose from with everything made from scratch and nut-free. Dessert boxes come in small or large, feeding 10-15 or 20-30 people, respectively. Christmas classics like cinnamon buns and sticky toffee pudding are available for order, as well as 8-inch Christmas designed cakes. There is also a wide selection of cookies and squares. Customers are encouraged to order early for Christmas Eve pick-up as there are a limited number or order spots.
Niagara Falls
Portage Bakery is offering their authentic store-made Italian panettone. The bakery makes various flavour options from traditional, cranberry or even the irresistible chocolate-hazelnut nutella. Christmas fruitcakes and other Italian inspired Christmas cookies and desserts are also available for purchase in-store.
