Ontario government announces newly approved grape varieties to support Vinters industry

In what is being described as a landmark moment for Ontario grape farmers and wine makers, the Ontario government announced this week that it is incorporating 24 new varieties of grapes into the Vintners Quality Alliance certified wine designation.

Ontario Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement Stephen Crawford hailed the announcement as fantastic news, emphasizing the “great-tasting, top-quality wines,” being produced by Vintners across the province.

“As we approach Buy Ontario, Buy Canadian Day, we are proud to support this thriving industry and remind everyone that world-class wine is being made right here at home,” Crawford said in reference to the upcoming June 27 observance, which is taking place ahead of the Canada Day long weekend.

The new varieties of grapes have been added to the certification list because of their resilience in adverse conditions, lack of reliance on chemicals, and their reputation for producing exceptional wine.

“On behalf of Grape Growers of Ontario, we are delighted that the Ontario government has approved 24 additional grape varieties for Vintners Quality Alliance certified wine,” said organizational Chair Matthias Oppenlaender. “This additional list of approved varieties provides growers across Ontario with more opportunities to be sustainable and to move more grapes into world class certified wines.”

The expansion is a particularly significant development for the Niagara Region, which is home to the largest wine industry in Ontario, as well as Canada.

“Approving these new grape varieties means our local wineries and farm families can continue to innovate and adapt to changing growing conditions and bring new, distinctive wines to market,” said Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff.  “This is a win for our farmers, a win for sustainability, and a win for everyone who enjoys high-quality Ontario wine.”

“Niagara’s wineries are already some of the best in the world, and this announcement helps them stay ahead.”

The celebratory occasion also comes during a time in which the Ontario government seeks innovative ways to support the domestic economy, while U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threats continue to loom.

“Expanding the list of grape varieties certified by the Vintners Quality Alliance is great news for Ontario’s grape growers and wineries,” said Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness Trevor Jones. “It opens new opportunities for growth at a time when the market is growing and modernizing and when local agribusiness has never been more important.”

“Whether you are visiting a winery, dining out or shopping, choose a locally grown and globally acclaimed Ontario wine.”

Vintner Quality Alliance sold over $433.6 million worth of wines in the 2024 fiscal year.
