As the end of July fast approaches it’s time to update the local, Niagara, sports scene.
We’ll start on the hard court as the two-time defending champion Niagara River Lions enter the final week of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) regular season with a (10-12) record and two games left in their regular season. Wednesday in Saskatchewan and Friday in Calgary.
The River Lions are coming off a thrilling come from behind 106-102 home win over Ottawa on Sunday, and the playoffs – including another game at Meridian Centre – are still a possibility.

Down the 406 in the Rose City on the diamond, the Welland Jackfish moved into first place in the CBL (Canadian Baseball League) with a 30-8 victory over Kitchener.
Yes, you read that right. 30 runs. The Jackfish, now (22-10) on the campaign, hit 11 home runs in the game led by Logan Grant’s three long balls and seven runs batted in.

The Niagara Ironbacks of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League wrapped up their second season in the PGCBL with a (very respectable 19-18-2) record, just missing the playoffs.
To the lacrosse floor now as the St. Catharines Jr. A Athletics, who finished the regular season in first place with a (15-3) record, are now just a win away from advancing to the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League (OJLL) finals up 3-1 on Orangeville following Monday’s 13-5 victory.
Game 5 in the best of seven series goes Tuesday night from Canada Games Park at 8 pm.

The St. Catharines Jr. B Athletics were defeated in the West Division finals in three straight games by the Guelph Regals – who remain perfect in the postseason with a (9-0) record.
On the soccer pitch, the St. Catharines Club Roma Wolves Ontario Premier League (OPL) League 1 team sit in eighth place in the 12-team loop with 22 points
The Roma Wolves OPL League 3 Women’s team is still undefeated at (13-0-1) and well on their way to earning promotion next season.
