Before a packed crowd of supporters at Lakeview Vineyard, Deputy Lord Mayor Erwin Wiens officially launched his campaign for Lord Mayor of Niagara-on-the-Lake, unveiling a platform centred on fiscal responsibility, protecting agriculture, strengthening the local economy and ensuring growth remains balanced.
Dozens of supporters, including family, friends, community leaders, farmers, business owners, volunteers and residents, attended the campaign launch, where Wiens said his eight years on council — including the past four as Deputy Lord Mayor — have prepared him to lead the municipality.
“The past eight years on Council, including the last four years as Deputy Mayor, have prepared me for this moment. I understand what the role entails, the time commitment necessary, the legislative framework for municipalities, the challenges facing our Town, and the necessary partnerships that must be strengthened to protect what makes Niagara-on-the-Lake special.”
Affordability and responsible financial management were among the key themes of Wiens’ address, with the candidate pledging disciplined budgeting and greater accountability at Town Hall.
“Families are facing rising costs. Seniors are watching every dollar, and young families are working hard to build a future in an increasingly expensive world,” he said.
“Residents expect their local government to exercise the same discipline. As Lord Mayor, I will insist on responsible budgeting, accountable spending, and value for every tax dollar.”
Wiens also reaffirmed his opposition to municipal amalgamation, saying Niagara-on-the-Lake should continue determining its own future.
“Niagara-on-the-Lake has a unique identity, economy, and set of priorities. Our future should be determined by the people who live here—not by distant decision-makers or solutions designed for larger urban centres,” he said. “As Lord Mayor, I will be a strong and unwavering voice for local decision-making and local control.”
Agriculture was another central focus of the campaign launch. Wiens said protecting farmland, supporting local farmers and investing in agricultural infrastructure are critical to the municipality’s future.
“Agriculture is not simply part of our economy—it is our foundation,” said Wiens. “Our vineyards, orchards, wineries, and farms define our landscape and sustain our economy. The future of Niagara-on-the-Lake depends on the success of our agricultural community.”
As an example of advocacy efforts, Wiens pointed to the ongoing push for the Province to recognize irrigation as infrastructure and provide $41 million in funding to expand the Niagara irrigation system.
Economic development also featured prominently in Wiens’ platform. He said supporting local businesses, encouraging investment and strengthening tourism will help maintain Niagara-on-the-Lake’s quality of life. He also highlighted successful advocacy that resulted in a $35-million grant for the reconstruction of the Royal George Theatre.
“Tourism remains one of our greatest strengths, but we must continue supporting local businesses, encouraging investment, and ensuring Niagara-on-the-Lake remains competitive and welcoming,” he said. “Economic vitality and community character are not opposing goals. When managed properly, they strengthen one another.”
On growth, Wiens said the debate should focus on responsible planning rather than choosing between development and preservation.
“The conversation should never be growth versus no growth,” he said. “Development must be supported by infrastructure, protect agriculture, and fit the character of our community. We can grow thoughtfully while preserving what makes Niagara-on-the-Lake unlike anywhere else.”
Wiens concluded by expressing optimism about the municipality’s future.
“I believe Niagara-on-the-Lake’s best days are ahead. Together, we can drive down taxes, protect local decision-making, support agriculture, strengthen our economy, and ensure growth reflects the values and character of our community.”
The campaign launch also drew endorsements from several prominent Niagara-on-the-Lake residents.
Joe Pillitteri, co-owner of Lakeview Vineyard Equipment, volunteer and philanthropist, said Wiens has consistently demonstrated leadership through his community involvement.
“I’ve known Erwin for many years—Whether he’s supporting local charities, helping neighbours, or standing up for the interests of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Erwin leads with integrity, common sense, and a genuine commitment to people. He understands the importance of protecting our agricultural heritage while ensuring our community remains strong and prosperous for future generations. I’m proud to support Erwin Wiens for Lord Mayor because I know he will put community first and provide the thoughtful, steady leadership our town deserves.”
Former Lord Mayor Art Viola also endorsed Wiens, citing both his public service and personal character.
“I endorse Deputy Lord Mayor Erwin Wiens for the office of Lord Mayor. He is a friend, a fellow Lion, and a tireless volunteer. He possesses patience, integrity, industry, sincerity, and of course ability. He would bring to the office competence, fairness, accountability and an understanding heart. With these attributes, he will service our people and our community well.”
Janice Thomson, former Executive Director of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Chamber of Commerce and former Chair of the Niagara Parks Commission, said Wiens has the experience needed to lead the municipality.
“I am confident that Erwin Wiens has the experience, character, and commitment needed to lead Niagara-on-the-Lake with honesty and vision. With years of experience in public service outside of Niagara-on-the-Lake, he understands the importance of listening to input and implementing workable local solutions that incorporate support from higher levels of government and neighbouring communities.
